  • Insights: African Leadership Congress (ALC) on Space Science and Technology for Sustainable Development 2019

The ALC 2019 was held between 2nd and 4th December 2019. It was held at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Its theme was “Prospects and Challenges of African Space Development”. Discussions cut across earth observation data and its application to governance and space law and policy. Other than the main sessions, other side events included the youth forum and the Women in Aerospace-Africa session.
ASW’s space policy lead, Maryanne Muriuki was awarded the AUC scholarship that enabled her to attend the ALC. Ms. Muriuki presented her digital poster on the Kibera Aeronautics and Space Academy (KASA). Her presentation pointed out the potential collaboration with Tunapanda Institute in the KASA project could build skills and address issues for the urban poor. The ALC is being renamed the African Leadership Space Congress and will next be held in 2021.
